The
2002/2003 academic term marked the sixth - and final - year
for the classroom version of the Friends highly successful
"California History and Art" program offered free
of charge to fourth graders attending elementary schools located
in Carlsbad. More than 1,000 students from 34 classes in 11
schools participated.
(With
the opening of the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park in August
2003, the Friends program will move from the classroom to
the rancho for a greatly enhanced hands-on perspective. Details
will be announced later.)
Each
half-day classroom session began with a 30-minute review and
discussion of native son Leo Carrillo (1880-1961) and his
role in California history as a character actor, artist, poet,
historian, preservationist, conservationist, recreationist
and confidante of leading state and national entertainment,
political and industrial figures.
Students
were told how Mr. Carrillo was dedicated to his Rancho
de Los Kiotes (Carrillo Ranch) in southeast Carlsbad
where he devoted his energy and financial resources to the
re-creation of an Old California-style working rancho. The
most intense period of his involvement covered more than two
decades from 1937 to the late 1950's.
Following
the students' orientation to the California history element,
the next 2 1/2 hours were spent learning how to use oil pastels
to express their visions of Carrillo Ranch. They were under
the guidance of a professional artist-educator. Since the
rancho was still closed to the public, field trips were not
available and the young artists were obliged to work from
audio/visual aids.
From
a pool of hundreds of colorful artworks the artist-educator
selected 34 Best-Of-Class winners who received individual
Certificates of Excellence. Their creations were then carefully
digitized for presentation on the Internet with parental consent
as required by law.
