For
over a decade the Friends of Carrillo Ranch, Inc. has been
conducting California history classes for fourth grade students
in the elementary schools of North Coastal San Diego County.
Focusing on Carlsbad's historic Carrillo Ranch has proven
to be an effective and long-lasting teaching vehicle. More
than 10,000 youngsters have benefited from this program, always
offered to the schools at no charge.
In
1998 the Friends added a new and much more expensive element:
classroom workshops conducted by professional art instructors
to complement the study of California history. This resulted
in restricting participation to the elementary schools within
Carlsbad's city limits. But the impact was noticeably greater
and the program's popularity has soared.
During
the 2000/2001 academic year over 1,000 fourth grade students
from 31 classes at 10 schools participated, a majority of
whom elected to submit their workshop creations for judging
in a voluntary art competition. They also opted to share their
visions with peers, family and friends. Uploading these images
to the Internet (parental consent required) opens up a worldwide
audience of admirers.
At
the end of the judging there were 31 Best-Of-Class winners
(exhibited in the Gallery below) and 124 outstanding runnersup.
Program
funding has been provided by spontaneous donations from members
of the Friends, the Target store in Oceanside, the Wells Fargo
Foundation (courtesy of La Costa branch, Wells Fargo Bank),

Enjoy.
