In 2004 the National Trust For Historic Preservation (a function of the National Park Service, Washington, D.C.) awarded the city of Carlsbad $197,000 toward the adaptive re-use of Carrillo Ranch's old hay barn as part of its "Save America's Treasures" program. City Council subsequently approved a 100% match which is in place.

Upon conclusion of the project the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park will have added a unique 70 seat multi-media theatre where visitors (including students on field trips) will receive their initial orientation to the history of the rancho and the 18 structures still remaining. The theatre will also be ideal for lectures, concerts, retreats and meetings where groups of modest size can enjoy, when desired, a highly sophisticated audio-visual experience. This undertaking will greatly enhance the Park's ability to serve the needs of the community and its guests.

The facility will also feature expanded exhibit space. An office, storage area and unisex restroom are planned as additional amenities. Best of all - for some visitors - the Old Barn Theatre is on the same level as the parking lot and will require only a short, easy stroll along a shady ranch lane.

Meanwhile, sufficient funds are already in hand so that the final design work can move forward concurrently. Well-known Heritage Architecture and Planning of San Diego has been engaged for this purpose.

The city may be able to recoup a portion of its capital costs through the sale of naming rights to the barn exterior and certain interior elements. This can be an ideal vehicle for recognizing a generous philanthropic gesture or to memorialize a living or deceased loved one. Interested parties should contact the Park staff or the Friends for private guidance without obligation.
